The NEEDS Center held its annual Juneteenth celebration, bringing together nearly every Massachusetts-based residence for a day filled with learning, fun, and community spirit.

The event featured a variety of activities that blended reflection with celebration. People we support enjoyed games like Giant Connect 4 and Giant Jenga, and filled the event with energy through music and dancing. A meaningful highlight was the “What Does Juneteenth Mean to Me?” activity, led by Our Director of Clinical Services, BCBA, Kathleen Charochak. Participants shared their thoughts by writing them on a beautifully decorated board, helping everyone reflect on the importance and history of Juneteenth.

Food played an important role in the day’s celebration. In addition to burgers and hot dogs, guests enjoyed a staple of Rowley’s Juneteenth event—the community potluck—featuring delicious dishes from a wide variety of cultures and countries, representing the rich diversity within our programs and staff.

The space itself was transformed with vibrant flags from around the world and a stunning balloon display, creatively designed by Assistant Director of Clinical Services, BCBA, Ana Reynoso-Paulino, setting a festive and welcoming atmosphere for all.

A memorable moment from the day was when President and CEO Jim Sperry joined in on the festivities and cut the Juneteenth cake. The cake was then promptly enjoyed by all in attendance.

This wonderful event would not have been possible without the dedication and creativity of the Juneteenth Planning Committee. Special thanks to Training Manager - Lisa Smith, Assistant Director of Residential Services - Sophie So, Director of Clinical Services - Kathleen Charochak, and the entire team whose hard work made the celebration such a success.

The Juneteenth gathering at Rowley Day Services was a perfect blend of education, reflection, and fun, bringing our community together in honor of freedom, history, and unity.
