We were proud to participate in The Caring Force Merrimack Valley Rally on June 5 at Northern Essex Community College. We partnered with fellow providers, advocates, and supporters in calling for a greater investment in the human services workforce.

Representing The NEEDS Center, Sophie So, Assistant Director of Residential Services, addressed attendees and spoke about the importance of supporting Direct Support Professionals through increased funding and expanded student loan repayment and assistance programs. These initiatives can help attract and retain dedicated professionals who provide essential services to individuals with developmental disabilities and other support needs. During her remarks, Sophie highlighted the realities facing many human services workers, noting that "when people start to get put into survival mode because the rent is high and student loan bills are persistent, people are forced to place money as the priority. Burnout too often overpowers compassion, empathy, and the care we can provide." She also emphasized the impact meaningful support could have on the workforce, stating that these efforts would help ensure "that compassion, not burnout, defines their work."

Events like the Merrimack Valley Rally help bring attention to the challenges facing the human services sector and reinforce the need for policies that recognize the value of the workforce. We are grateful to Sophie for sharing her voice and helping advocate for meaningful change on behalf of both the people we support and the staff who support them every day.
